چکیده

081002-1 The interaction between a low-density electron cloud in a circular particle accelerator with a circulating charged particle beam is considered. The particle beam’s space charge attracts the cloud, enhancing the cloud density near the beam axis. It is shown that this enhanced charge and the image charges associated with the cloud charge and the conducting wall of the accelerator may have important consequences for the dynamics of the beam propagation. The tune shift due to the electron cloud is obtained analytically and compared to a new numerical model (QUICKPIC) that is described here. Sample numerical results are presented and their significance for current and planned experiments is discussed.

Using Tune Shifts to Evaluate Electron Cloud Effects on Beam Dynamics at CesrTA

The proposed future International Linear Collider (ILC) will collide electrons and positrons. Because positrons are antimatter, they are harder to produce than electrons and need to be accumulated and conditioned in a damping ring. The Cornell Electron Storage Ring Test Accelerator (CesrTA) at the Cornell Laboratory for Accelerator-based Sciences and Education (CLASSE) is similar to the damping...

Shielding simulations for safe use of curtain electron accelerator by MCNP4C

In an electron curtain accelerator, when the electron beam passes through the titanium exit window of the accelerator chamber, X-ray photons are produced as a negative by-product of retarding accelerated electrons. Controlling the produced X-ray photons to avoid their detrimental effects or in fact, proper shielding of the accelerator is an important issue that has to be considered in the use o...

Measurement of Electron Cloud Density with Microwaves in the Fermilab Main Injector*

Electron cloud density in the Fermilab Main Injector was measured by observing microwave transmission along the vacuum tube. Presence of the electron cloud reduces the velocity of the microwave signal. Both frequency and time domain methods reveal relative cloud density and time evolution. The effect of beam time structure is clearly evident. The accelerator magnetic field effects the distribut...

Electron Cloud Effects at Positron/Electron (e+/e-) Machines and Electron Cloud Diagnostics

Background electrons are ubiquitous in high-intensity particle accelerators. Under certain operating conditions, amplification of the electron cloud can occur. The beam-cloud interaction can seriously degrade the accelerator performance with effects that range from vacuum degradation to collective beam instabilities. Although electron cloud effects (ECEs) were first observed 20 years ago in a p...
